Despite Pakistan’s stringent ban on surrogate advertising for betting companies, former cricket legend and all-time leading wicket-taker Wasim Akram has sparked controversy by becoming a brand ambassador for the India-based betting platform Baji.
This partnership has raised legal and ethical concerns, given the strict regulations in Pakistan against promoting such platforms.
Baji, a prominent sports betting firm, has also recruited other well-known figures, including former adult actress Mia Khalifa, English cricket star Kevin Pietersen, and former Argentine footballer Gabriel Batistuta. Together, they form a high-profile team aimed at expanding the company’s presence in multiple markets.
Akram recently promoted the campaign on social media, sharing a video featuring Baji’s logo. In his caption, he wrote:
“Join me at Baji for some serious fun and excitement. Let’s enjoy the thrill and make lasting memories together! Can’t wait to share this journey with you! … Win like a King!”
In another post, the former Pakistan captain alluded to his long-standing involvement in sports, stating:
“I’ve had many unforgettable moments in cricket, but the real achievement is creating something that lasts. Join me at … and be part of the journey.”
The betting company also shared promotional posters featuring stars like Mia Khalifa to promote their app.
In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward surrogate advertising for betting companies. It urged all stakeholders to prevent the promotion of such entities during live sports broadcasts and issued a warning to media houses, companies, and relevant departments, prohibiting any agreements with these platforms.
