Canada condemns Israeli strikes on Gaza, UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

OTTAWA: On Wednesday, Canada adopted a firmer stance against Israel, condemning its airstrikes on civilian infrastructure in Gaza and targeting of United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, calling for an immediate halt to these actions.

Historically, Canada has supported Israel’s military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. However, like other allies, it is increasingly voicing concerns about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

“Canada condemns the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) for their escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure in northern Gaza and on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. These actions are unacceptable and must cease immediately,” the statement read.

The situation for civilians in Gaza has become increasingly dire, with humanitarian aid severely restricted. “The Palestinian civilian population has been displaced numerous times, lacking safe refuge and unable to satisfy even their most basic needs,” the statement continued.

This declaration, issued by Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and International Aid Minister Ahmed Hussen, also reiterated Canada’s call for an immediate ceasefire and condemned the attacks on Israel by both Hamas and Hezbollah.
