City braces for scorching weekend

PMD says temperatures may soar to 40 degrees Celcius on Saturday

KARACHI: Sea breezes may temporarily cease over the weekend, leading to intense heat in the city on Saturday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Early Warning Centre.

Currently, northwestern winds from Balochistan are impacting the city, but these will shift to a northeastern direction from Balochistan over the next two days.

Isolated thunderstorms with rain and lightning are predicted for Umerkot and Tharparkar on Monday and Tuesday, while the rest of the province is expected to stay hot and dry.

Yesterday, the Met Office predicted hot and humid weather for Karachi over the next three days, with other districts likely to experience hot and dry conditions.

Additionally, in a press release today, the PMD stated that the depression over the west-central Arabian Sea has moved further northwest in the past 12 hours.

The system is now about 1,150 km southwest of Karachi and 830 km southwest of Gwadar. It is situated roughly 130 km southeast of Duqm, Oman, and 190 km south-southwest of Masirah, Oman, with its center about 490 km northeast of Salalah, Oman. The depression is expected to continue moving northwest toward the Oman coast and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by the morning of October 16. No coastal areas of Pakistan are under threat from this system, the Met Office confirmed.
