Texas football has been part of several iconic matchups in its storied history, often dubbed “The Game of the Century.” From the 1969 win against Arkansas to the unforgettable national championship victory over USC in 2005, the Longhorns have seen their share of historic games.
While Saturday’s showdown with Georgia may not carry quite the same weight, it’s certainly one of the most highly anticipated games of the 2024 college football season. The clash between No. 1 Texas and No. 4 Georgia at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin will have major implications for both the SEC championship race and the 12-team College Football Playoff.
For Georgia, already carrying a loss to Alabama, the stakes are especially high. A defeat against Texas wouldn’t necessarily eliminate the Bulldogs from playoff contention, but it would make their path far more difficult.
This will mark just the third top-five matchup in the century-long history of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, and the first since 2006, when No. 2 Texas, led by freshman Colt McCoy, fell to No. 1 Ohio State.
Texas, fresh off a dominant 34-3 victory over Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, enters this game undefeated at 6-0 for the first time since 2009. A win over Kirby Smart’s Georgia squad would bring the Longhorns one step closer to realizing their national championship aspirations.
