India clinched the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June, defeating South Africa in the final of a tournament co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies. However, concerns have arisen as some players have yet to receive their prize money, prompting the ICC to engage with several cricket boards to resolve the issue, sources told Reuters on Thursday.
The delay in payments has sparked criticism, with the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) issuing a statement on Wednesday highlighting “threatening and intimidatory behaviour” reported by players against national governing bodies.
“We are deeply troubled by reports of threats directed at players who advocate for themselves and their peers,” WCA CEO Tom Moffat said. “We value the ICC’s efforts to ensure players are paid in full and urge decisive action against any boards that fail to meet their obligations.”
Moffat emphasized that every cricketer deserves full entitlement to their earnings and a safe, supportive environment to play and advocate for themselves through players’ associations if they choose.
The ICC is reportedly in discussions with five of the 20 participating nations to ensure timely payments and uphold the terms of participation, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding players’ rights and benefits.
